Though there are so many traffic-generating techniques that have been introduced in the World Wide Web in the last couple of years, the best source of traffic is still the search engines. That is why it of utmost importance that you know how to optimize your site to improve your search engine ranking that can result to more traffic.

1. Initiate link campaigns. Identify your potential link partners and request for reciprocal linking. To make this work best for you, identify the topics that are closely relevant to yours. For example, if you are running a website about reading glasses, you can link to sites that talks about ophthalmology, eye disorders and vision problems, designer eye glasses, etc.

2. Understand each search engines algorithm. Giant search engines like Yahoo! Google and MSN have different requirements in ranking websites. Knowing these requirements and properly applying them on your website will guarantee your secure spots on these search engines.

3. Use Meta tags. To help web crawlers to properly categorize and index your site, make sure that you provide descriptions of your web content.

4. Create a link to me page. Let your visitors know that you are looking for potential link partners and guide them in contacting you should they decide to link with you. Before you grant them reciprocal linking, check their websites to see if it is a great source of information and if your visitors will benefit from it. Also check its search engine ranking and the date it was established. The longer its existence in the World Wide Web, the better.

5. Use Google toolbar. This will help you to easily track the traffic rank and popularity of your website.
